Bumpy Roads

I find myself back at the blog, and once again it's at the lull right after a big push. I've just finished my grad school auditions, finally, and was prepared to celebrate. However, my most beloved family member had a sudden, severe accident with a ladder, and is now in the hospital. It's a miracle that he's even still here, and all I can do tonight is sit back, completely overwhelmed by the huge twists and turns of the past couple of weeks. I've spent the past two days with this hat pattern, as a present for a beautiful baby girl. As I worked on it, I thought frequently of Elizabeth Zimmermann's famous motto, "Knit on with confidence and hope, through all crises." I really don't know what I'd do if I didn't knit. It would probably involve a lot of hand-wringing and awkward staring. Furthermore, I think it helps more than the knitter, and that knitting produces an aura of calmness that helps everyone around. In the end, the action soothes anxiety while producing something beautiful, and what could be better than that?

On that note, I think I'll go start another hat.
