In the Moment

Today was a day of surprises. I had decided last night that I would use today to learn music, apply for jobs, and generally Get Things Done. I woke up late this morning with a terrible headache, and I was moving pretty slowly--but still planning on hitting the To-Do list, eventually. Then, in the course of a conversation with Ben, I decided to look up the characters from my favorite childhood book, so that I could show him.

Does anyone remember Golden Girl and the Guardians of the Gemstones?

Golden Girl started out as a toy line in the 80s that was only released for a year. Later, books were written about the characters, and there was a board game, and a short-lived TV show. This pre-dated She-Ra, which I didn't know until today. I had a She-Ra toy when I was little that I thought was Golden Girl, but it's good to know that Golden Girl wasn't a rip-off. Anyway, this book was the origin story for Golden Girl and explains how she gets the Gemstone that she and the other Guardians protect in later books. I did not have this book when I was little, I had one of the later ones, which was aimed at a slightly younger audience and was sold with an accompanying cassette, which I didn't have:

My PawPaw and I probably read this book a thousand times. It was old when I got it--acquired, no doubt, at one of the garage sales that we frequented on Sundays. It only got more worn with constant reading, and eventually my PawPaw had to reinforce the spine with tape. I remember specifically that it was old-fashioned clear tape with the threads in it, like this:
Unfortunately, when I got older Hurricane Katrina took the book, so I don't have it anymore.

Anyway, while I was looking up pictures of the Dragon Queen to show to Ben, we started looking on Ebay and Amazon at the different merchandise that was available for sale. We wound up spending most of the afternoon looking at things, and Ben won an auction for this awesome lunch box--we got it for $5!

As you can see, it comes with a thermos, and it's exactly like another lunch box I had as a child, just with the Golden Girl pictures on it, instead. I'm very, very excited! Then, I started looking into the book I had when I was a kid, and found that it's very hard to come by these days! But, motivated by the challenge, I found both the book I owned before, AND the original, origin-story book, at very reasonable prices! So, those will be in the mail very soon, as well as my lunchbox!

After that, I offered to make Ben whatever he wanted for dinner, to thank him for winning me the lunchbox. First, he asked for Mexican, but we didn't have everything I needed, so he asked me to make something with potatoes, instead. I thought about it for a little while, and a couple of hours later, we had this!

I made cheesy twice-baked potatoes with fajita-style chicken and vegetables. It came out exactly the way I wanted it to, and I'm so pleased. I sliced the bell peppers and onions, and put them in a big bowl with the sliced raw chicken. Then, I seasoned everything liberally and stuck it in the fridge during the hour that I was baking the potatoes. This gave the chicken a lot of flavor. This was one of the first times that I basically improvised a meal, and I'm so glad it came out well. Best of all, Ben was thrilled with it.

So, today I accomplished nothing that I planned to do. Instead, I ended up having a romp through my childhood--and books and a lunchbox! (I used birthday money, so I have no guilt about the budget.) Then, I whipped up a delicious impromptu meal! I might have to do some serious catching-up on work later, but today I lived in the moment, and it was fantastic.

Ravelversary

I remembered last night, while I was knitting on Dolores during intermission at The Music of Pink Floyd that my Ravelversary was coming up. Fearing that I had missed it, I quickly checked Rav on Ben's phone and found out that it was today. On May 16, 2009, I was invited to join this lovely web community, and I will forever be SO grateful that I am able to participate in it. I would never have become the crocheter/knitter that I am today, without Ravelry to inspire, teach, and encourage (and, of course, enable) me. Although today will be a somewhat non-yarny day for me, I will be celebrating all day long. I'll have even more of a chance to celebrate my Ravelversary tomorrow, when my Harmony Interchangables and DPNs and new knitting books arrive from KnitPicks. If they don't come tomorrow, then I'll celebrate again when they do. I also purchased enough Cascade 220 at WEBS to make two sweaters! Their Cascade is on sale (4.99 a hank!) until the end of the month, and there's tons of it in stock! So, I'll be looking forward to receiving that, and making sweaters (and socks, but more on that later) after my ten shawls are complete.

With that, I must embark on a far-flung and potentially irritating day. But, I'm going to make the most of it, and I hope everyone out there has a great day, too.

Minutes

Things have been hectic for me lately. It's midterms time, and even when I'm not studying, my mind is so used to stressing that I sometimes find myself wondering what I'm actually stressed about.

Gaenor is half done now. I did not meet my goal of having her done in time to order the yarn yesterday. I plan on knitting my butt off tonight, in the hopes that I will get close to being done. That way, I won't feel quite so bad for ordering the yarn early, which is going to have to happen if I don't finish it tonight. This is the last picture I took of it:

I had one of it actually spread out, but I accidentally deleted it, and it's nighttime now, so I can't get another one today. You can see one of the lovely stitch markers that I got recently from babydragonjewlery on Etsy. I was looking for something cute, but these were so downright badass that I just had to have them.

I'm going to get in a good two or three hours of knitting tonight on Gaenor, so hopefully I will make real progress.

Someone decided to leave this on the garbage can by the practice rooms today. It gave me a smile that I desperately needed. I hope it brightens your day, too.

My copies of Whimsical Little Knits 1 and 2 arrived from Ysolda yesterday. It took a little while for them to get here because of the international shipping, and I'm so glad that they're here! I can't wait to make some of the lovely things inside.

We're leaving for Brahms in a week tomorrow. Wow. I'd better decide what projects I want to bring with me. I don't anticipate being able to finish more than one during the trip. It just depends on how much progress I've made on my next one before we leave.

Playing catch-up

Well, I've definitely neglected the blog over the past four days. I've been in a mad rush to get things taken care of before I go back to school, and I'm just not getting anywhere. We have plans to go see friends pretty much every day until I go back, and I have so much laundry backed up, and cleaning to do, and then there's Brahms...

But, even though I'm coming out of this holiday with very little net sleep gain (if any), I'm going to make the best of it. I'm afraid this is going to be a bit of a drive-by blogging, because I have to go work on Brahms before I have to leave.

In recent news, my Animal Parade Bag has arrived from Ravelry!

I feel like I've been talking about something I bought, or plan to buy, in every blog update. I promise, I don't usually buy stuff constantly. It just happened that I did a good bit of buying/planning to buy, and started this blog at the same time. After my sheepy bracelet arrives from watersedgejewelry, I'll be done spending for quite a while. I can't wait for my little flock of sheep to arrive!

Ben and I saw The Princess and the Frog last night. I have to say, it's one of the best movies that Disney has made since I was a child. I completely recommend this movie to everyone, male and female, young and old. It's just an amazing movie. It blew me away.

Well, I have to get back to Brahms. I'm pretty much done, but I need to polish a bunch before that audition happens. The Pantomime is coming along nicely, I'm sorta running on faith that I'm not going to run out of yarn by tweaking the pattern the way that I am. Wish me luck!

Wool Fumes...

It is as I promised.

Prepare yourselves.

Aaaaaahhhh... I am still reveling in the glory of it all. I cannot wait to start using all of this deliciousness.

In further news, this is what exists so far of the Cranberry Pantomime.

I'm debating over whether or not to add more extended sc rows before I start the outside/edging. I know that the shawl is going to come out smaller than the original in the pattern, because I'm using lighter yarn and a smaller hook. But, I don't want it to come out too small. But, I'm also afraid that, if I add more rows, I will run out of yarn along the way. I'm going to wait and see how much yarn I have left after the exsc section is done as per the pattern, and go from there. I should get a yarn scale...

I may die of bliss.

I just opened my first package ever from Eat. Sleep. Knit.

Within:

Malabrigo Sock-Stonechat

Dream in Color Smooshy-Pansy Golightly, Dusky Aurora, Happy Forest

Scarlet Fleece:Painted Merino-Guitar Hero

I think I had my first, really really real yarngasm. I am (almost) embarrassed to admit that I actually moaned when I held the Dream in Color. It really is that smooshy. I would be actually embarrassed, but I know for sure that you would have moaned, too. It was enough to make me truly desire, for a moment, to toss aside any and everything that I'm working on, and just dedicate myself to this box of yarn.

I also got my yarnathon welcome pack, which has an ESK button (!! I love buttons !!), a really cute pen, and a knitting pattern which I, sadly, cannot use. Also, my lotto ticket yielded five dollars in store credit, yay!!

I had no idea how awesome this box full of joy was going to be. I cannot wait until morning, when I can take pictures that might, maybe, do all of this justice.

On another happy note, look over there! >>>>>>>>

I have shiny, new progress bars for my WIPs, powered by Rav!

This has been a very happy day, all around. It was Ben's last day of vacation before he went back to work, and we generally had a very nice day. There was much Halo victory on my part.

There was also much not-victory, but it all evened out.

I am so excited about all of my new yarn! I also have an animal parade bag coming from Rav. I promised myself that these would be my last buys for a while, but I decided that I would save up a little more so that I could buy this absolutely perfect flock of sheep bracelet that I found on Etsy. After that, I really am laying off of the pocketbook for a while.

I'm going to go work on the Pantomime. I have some pent-up yarn love to work out. ^-^

Cleaning and Mermaids

Mmmmm, sleepy. I should be asleep. I have work in the morning.

Today, I (finally) began the epic battle with my closet. When we moved into our house last year, I put all of the boxes into the closet. Since then, my room has grown around all of the stuff in the closet, to the point where it kinda became a huge, organized mess. Well, I decided that today was the day, and I jumped in. I'm not finished yet, but I'll probably knock it out the rest of the way tomorrow. I made a lot of progress today, and I'm pooped.

I was rewarded, though, by my package from madbird arriving today. I waited until just now to open it, as incentive to clean more.

(Please forgive the bad lighting. I wanted pictures NOW.)

Wow. I'm so sleepy, that I totally forgot that I was working on a blog post, and got lost on Rav for a while. I should definitely go to bed soon.

But, anyway, I am so happy with this purchase! The product is wonderful, as was the packaging and the nice 'thank you' card that the seller included! This was a very enjoyable buying experience, and I highly recommend madbird. She makes knitting needle and crochet hook cases, project bags, and zipper bags, among other things.

Okay, sleepytime now, before I pass out on the keyboard.
